Bite Corrector Appliances
Orthodontic treatment typically involves moving the teeth to a better position to correct crooked teeth, but orthodontics is defined as the treatment and correction of irregularities and malalignment in the teeth and jaws.
Orthodontists use a variety of devices (or appliances) to correct malalignment in the mouth. Braces are the first appliances that come to mind when mentioning orthodontics. While these are the most used, many other conditions require different types of appliances for corrective purposes.
A “functional appliance” helps correct more serious bite problems and is designed to use the natural forces of the muscles and jaw to bring the bite into better alignment. Functional appliances include:
The Activator
Bionator
Twin Block
Herbst
Some of these appliances cannot be removed, as they are required to be fixed to the mouth. Others are more like a retainer and are removable as needed.
Functional appliances work by repositioning of the jaw, instead of being focused on the movement of teeth (such as with braces). These are most effective in an adolescent around the time of puberty, while the jaw is still developing, but in some cases can be used in adults.
The alignment of the jaw and teeth, as well as the correct function of the facial and mouth muscles, are all important in correct speech patterns and the ability to chew effectively. Many other conditions can disrupt the optimal function of one’s mouth. Chisari Orthodontics are experts in correcting these conditions. Our practice has many other bite corrector devices available to address your individual needs.
